A BELGIAN HAS DISCOVERED THE BACTERIA OF BEAUTY!
PERPLEXING EFFECTS FROM FOOD POISON.
THE BOTOX BUG
![]() It was the Belgian, Emile van Ermengem, who discoverd the source of the fatal disease "botulisme" as a bacterium "clostridium botulinum. He isolated the bug in 1895 from a piece of ham that had poisoned three people. It wasn't until the 1940's that the actual toxic substance that the bacterium produced was isolated and purified. They called it Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A) In the 1970s, Dr. Schantz discovered that BTX-A, corrected crossed eyes in laboratory monkeys. A few years later, Dr. Scott began to test the toxin's effectiveness in treating muscle spasms around the eyes of humans. |
FROM MILITARY TOP SECRET RESEARCH TO CLINICAL USE
HELPING WITH SPASMS AND PAINS
![]() Military authorities during World War II were interested in the use of botulinum as a weapon, and Dr. Schantz helped produce it and evaluate its potential. His research helped conclude that botulinum had only limited battlefield applications. Later, in the 1960's, the praised biochemist became a supplier of the toxin for scientific purposes. Dr. Alan B. Scott, tested a sample on monkeys in a bid to find a nonsurgical cure for crossed eyes, by relaxing the eye muscles. Animal subjects were then replaced with humans in the next decade when Dr. Scott received government approval to use human participants in his scientific work. Results revealed that botulinum toxin type A was a safe and effective treatment for crossed eyes. Other research showed botulinum toxin was helpful in relieving all kinds of spasms from facial to vocal cord spasms. BOTOX still is a first line treatment for conditions such as blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, cervical dystonia and even vaginismus. Not only is it effective in reducing muscle hyperactivity and spasm, it can also reduce the pain associated with cervical dystonia, achalasia, and rectal fissures. |
1987
THE START OF AN EXPLOSIVE SPREAD WORLDWIDE
![]() The real cosmetic breakthrough came in 1987, when Dr. Jean Carruthers, a Canadian ophthalmologist, noticed that after she used the drug to treat eye muscle spasms, the crow's feet around the eyes of her patients improved dramatically. Her husband, dermatologist Alastair Carruthers, decided to try it out on his receptionist, and discovered how Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A) could be used as an injectable drug to reverse some of the signs of aging on the face. Without a doubt, Botox is revolutionary: an inexpensive, rapid, minimally invasive procedure that can literally take years off your face. The Botox dose that we use for reversing signs of aging skin is extremely small and well within the safe level. There is no possibility of a buildup over time with continued treatments, as the product is entirely broken down and excreted in a short period of time. |
BOTOX FOR HYPERHIDROSIS
TEMPORARY BLOCK TO SWEATY ARMPITS
![]() A small amount of BOTOX injected in 10 minutes can give a relief of up to sIx months from excessive sweating. This is particaularly useful in the summer season and mainly indicated for armpits. Likewise BOTOX is probably best treatment for seriously sweaty feet. It is tedious and uncomfortable because you may need about 36 tiny injections into the soles of the feet and the skin of the feet is very sensitive. Therefore I recommend a good anaesthetic! THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR SURGERY!!! Hyperhidrosis of the face and hands do often better after a surgical sympathectomy. You will have to find a good thoracic surgeon to do this for you and discuss the pro's and cons before doing so. Likewise, patients with sweaty armpits may prefer a local plastic surgery procedure to incapacitate these sweat glands more permanently with a surgical procedure. The procedure requires small incisions and can be performed with local anesthesia. Most patients report significant, permanent reduction in sweating. |
RELEASING THE TENSION FROM MIGRAINE
OFFICIALLY APPROVED FOR THE PURPOSE
![]() Botox, the most popular of medical grade BTX-A, is increasingly more used as a preventive treatment of certain types of headaches. This happened after double blind study in the USA to assess the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX) in the prevention of migraine. Click HERE for a photo with the recommended injection sites indicated by red dots. Compared with subjects who received placebo injections, the subjects in the Botox treatment group experienced: Injection of botulinum toxin type A, 25 U, was found to be a safe treatment that significantly reduced migraine frequency, migraine severity, acute medication usage, and associated vomiting. |
STILL A MYTHICAL SUBSTANCE
ARTISTS' INSPIRATION
Few products in nature have litterally perplexed artists as much as BOTOX has. The refined enhancement of its selectively perplexing effect on the muscles of mimicry, subconsciously reminds us of the aloof impression most intriguing people expose. From the Mona Lisa or Mariline Monroe, to stars as Madonna and Lady Gaga, the popularity of their image has everything to do with a certain mystical abscence of emotional outing. Good portret painters and photographers have always understood this. Powerful portraits will always hide emotion and leave the viewer behind wondering what could be on the subject's mind. |
