INSTINCTS IN PLASTIC SURGERY

THE THREE BASIC DRIVES IN SEXUAL SELECTION:

THE BEAUTY INSTINCT

is a very powerful force in the biological history of mankind. Humans use sexual selction as a evolutionary steering mechanisme in a way more significant than that of any animal. Biologically, beauty is a measure for fitness to successful procreation. Human beauty comprises the following 3 criteria:

1. YOUTHFULNESS

PARTICULARLY FOR THE FEMALE

Man is the only animal with a menopause. Therefore, particularly in woman to look young is generally considered to be a hallmark of beauty. A large proportion of the cosmetic industry, including cosmetic surgery is geared towards preventing and treating the signs of aging.

2. HEALTH

BEAUTY AS A VISABLE PARAMETER

Ill health could have a hereditary component. Therefore, on a purely instinctive basis, we are aversive against all signs of it. Rotting teeth, a smelling breath, a lousy skin, wasting or fatting, brittle hair and nails, bloating etc.... are all reasons why patients seek medical or other help.

3. THE MORPHOLOGICAL MEAN

IDEAL PROPORTIONS IN GEOMETRY

When morphing a random mix of a large number of individual appearances within one race, the resultant "mean" appears to be within the margins of what has been described as the ideal proportions. In other words: any deviation from the mean may be considered a cosmetic disturbance by their owner and a reason for him or her to go for a "reshape" at the plastic surgery. Examples are noses, breasts, fat distribution, chin, ears, genitals, etc...

This part of the beauty instinct assures the attractiveness of the same species and is the main reason for the species not to spent energy fruitlessly on mating attempts with other species, which per definition wil remain barren.

The deviation from the mean may be congenital or acquired by trauma, disease or previous surgery. All can be indications for plastic surgery.
